Every windy region has its notorious wind. Calgary has the Chinook. The Alps have the Foehn. Southern California has the Santa Anas, southern France the Mistral, the Middle East the Sharav. And everywhere these winds blow, they carry centuries-old reputations for headaches, irritability, and "wind sickness."

Folklore? Partly. But wind is one of the few weather-trigger folk beliefs that's been put under a research microscope with interesting results.

The best-known research comes from Calgary, where warm, dry Chinook winds roar down off the Rockies and can raise temperatures dramatically within hours. Researchers tracking migraine patients found that a subset experienced significantly more attacks on Chinook days — and, intriguingly, some were sensitive specifically to the pre-Chinook period, the day before the wind arrived, while others reacted to high-wind days themselves.

How Wind Triggers Attacks

What the wind carries. Wind is a delivery system: dust, pollen, pollution, and dry air all travel on it. Santa Ana winds famously spike allergy and irritation complaints, and sinus and airway irritation can serve as an on-ramp to migraine in prone people.

Extreme dryness. Downslope winds are desiccating — humidity can crash when they arrive, accelerating dehydration and irritating eyes and airways. The dry-air pathway applies in full.

What to Do If Wind Is Your Trigger
